Youth Advisory Board member shares value of her involvement

Emma Weiss, one of the original members of the Ohio Small Grains Marketing Program Youth (OSGMP) Advisory Board in 2011-2012, shares her experience:

I attended Mount Gilead High School and got involved with the OSGMP Youth Advisory Board (YAB) as a result of participating in the Food for Thought Challenge. We came up with the Food for Thought Program to implement a healthy eating campaign in schools to get students to choose whole grains. My high school did two different activities. Fall Fun Day was different activities that younger kids could do with their family. We also had a taste test during the lunch period for a few days, encouraging people to try whole grain foods.

On the Youth Advisory Board, I worked with an intern on a monthly newsletter featuring the FFA chapters that were participating in the Food for Thought contest. I also designed materials for OSGMP people working in a booth at the Ohio State Fair. As part of a team, I gave a presentation to the Ohio Corn Marketing Board meeting about Food for Thought 2.0 and ideas for what they wanted to do at the fair that year.

I attend Marion Technical College and The Ohio State University Marion branch, working on degrees in Marketing Management and Agribusiness. Being a part of the YAB got me interested in the the Marketing degree. I enjoyed seeing the different ways that you can market an idea or product. Being a part of an idea, then turning that idea into a concept, then turning that concept into a reality, is a long tedious process. It pays off in the end because you end up learning about yourself and others, plus you get to see your idea turn into a reality. Being so involved with FFA in high school got me interested in the Agribusiness degree. Plus I only needed to take seven extra classes for the Agribusiness degree.

I really enjoyed my YAB experience, and my goal is to work with OSGMP. My advice to a high school student considering involvement in YAB is go for it! Sure, you might not know everyone and you might not know what to do. But in time you will learn and it will be the best experience ever. You also get to learn about yourself and how to work in a group. It could help you pick a college major or find something you’re interested in as a career. The biggest mistake that you can make in high school is not participating in something that you think could be fun or a learning experience. Later after you graduate and look back, you should not have any regrets about “I wish that I had done that when I was in high school.”
